Whirlwind

Whirlwind is an optimistic poem by reknowned Canadian author and poet, Ruth Desjardins

Caught in a whirlwind

That leaped to the sky

Taking me with it

And letting me fly

High above greyness

Away from the rain

Into the glory

Of freedom again.

Trapped by the spinning

Around and around

Out of control

My feet leave the ground

Whirled into nowhere

Tossed to and fro

Flung towards earth now

It’s spinning below.

You are the whirlwind

Laughing at love

Spinning in fury

From all you dreamed of

Reeling in circles

Looking for pain

Destroying all shelter

You’re whirling again.

Tossed by a whirlwind

Into the sun,

Landing in daisies

The whirling is done;

Cushioned by flowers

Alone by a stream,

Free to be happy,

Free now to dream.

On spins the whirlwind,

And I watch it go

Leaping and landing

In fury it flows.

I smile as I lie here

Dazed by it all

My whirlwind left freedom

And blew down the walls

You are the whirlwind

Laughing at love

Spinning in fury

From all you dreamed of;

Reeling in circles,

Looking for pain

Destroying all shelter

You’re whirling again.
